What is an Employment Brand?

Employment brand (often used interchangeably with employer brand) is the reputation and perception of an organisation as a place to work. While employer brand is typically the term used by HR and recruitment professionals for the actively managed aspect, employment brand refers more broadly to the overall market perception, including elements the organisation does not directly control: employee reviews, word of mouth, media coverage, and public perception of the company's treatment of workers.

Why it matters

Your employment brand exists whether you manage it or not. It is the sum of every interaction a person has with your organisation as a potential, current, or former employer. A strong employment brand attracts talent and reduces hiring costs. A weak or negative one repels candidates and forces you to compensate with higher salaries and more aggressive recruiting. Understanding the distinction between the brand you project and the brand people actually experience is the first step toward improvement.
