What is Hiring Bias?
Hiring bias is any prejudice, conscious or unconscious, that influences hiring decisions based on factors unrelated to a candidate's ability to perform the job. Common forms include affinity bias (preferring people similar to you), confirmation bias (seeking information that confirms initial impressions), halo effect (one positive trait influencing overall assessment), horn effect (one negative trait overshadowing everything else), and name or demographic bias.
Why it matters
Bias in hiring leads to less diverse teams, poorer hiring decisions, legal risk, and missed talent. It is pervasive because human decision-making is inherently subjective. The goal is not to eliminate bias entirely, which is impossible, but to design processes that minimise its impact. Structured interviews, anonymised screening, standardised criteria, diverse interview panels, and data-driven evaluation all help reduce bias and lead to fairer, better hiring outcomes.
