What is a Panel Interview?

A panel interview is an interview format where a candidate is interviewed by multiple people simultaneously, typically including the hiring manager, a peer, an HR representative, and sometimes a senior leader or cross-functional stakeholder. Each panellist evaluates the candidate from their own perspective and area of expertise. Panel interviews provide a more comprehensive assessment in a single session compared to sequential one-on-one interviews.

Why it matters

Panel interviews are efficient because they compress multiple evaluation perspectives into one meeting, reducing the number of interview rounds and accelerating time-to-hire. They also reduce individual bias since no single interviewer controls the evaluation. However, panels can be intimidating for candidates if not managed well. The key is preparation: each panellist should have defined questions and a clear role, so the interview feels like a conversation rather than an interrogation.
