What is a Structured Interview?

A structured interview is an interview format where all candidates are asked the same predetermined questions in the same order, and their responses are evaluated using a standardised scoring rubric. This is in contrast to unstructured interviews, where questions vary between candidates and evaluation is largely subjective. Structured interviews may include behavioural questions, situational questions, and skills-based assessments.

Why it matters

Research consistently shows that structured interviews are among the best predictors of actual job performance. They reduce the impact of interviewer bias, improve the fairness of the hiring process, and make it possible to compare candidates on a level playing field. For organisations focused on diversity and inclusion, structured interviews are essential because they evaluate candidates on what they can do rather than how well they click with the interviewer.
