What is a Competency-Based Interview?
A competency-based interview is a structured interview format where questions are designed to assess specific skills, behaviours, and attributes required for the role. Instead of asking hypothetical questions, competency-based interviews ask candidates to provide real examples from their past experience that demonstrate the target competency. For example: Tell me about a time you had to manage a conflicting priority. The STAR format (Situation, Task, Action, Result) is commonly used to structure answers.
Why it matters
Past behaviour is the best predictor of future performance. Competency-based interviews focus on what candidates have actually done rather than what they say they would do in a hypothetical scenario. This produces more reliable, objective evaluations and reduces the impact of candidates who interview well but lack real substance. For hiring teams, it standardises evaluation across interviewers and makes it easier to compare candidates fairly.
